Patent Technical Specialist (Preferably bilingual in English and Japanese) (Santa Clara)

Chen Yoshimura LLP is seeking a Patent Technical Specialist (preferably bilingual in English and Japanese) in its Santa Clara office.

The ideal candidate would have a strong technical background in the semiconductor industries and/or Physics with a strong commitment to pursue a career in patent law. This position will offer experienced engineers/scientists the opportunity to change careers and fast track to a Patent Technical Specialist, with a career path that could lead to a Patent Agent and further to a Patent Attorney.

This person will support patent attorneys in our firm with patent application preparation and prosecution by assisting the patent attorneys, drafting patent applications, reviewing and analyzing Office Actions, and providing technical comments and advice to clients. This person will also assist the patent attorneys in analyzing technical documents for patent license negotiation and litigation.

In addition to satisfactorily performing the essential duties above, this person must be able to successfully work in a small team environment with legal and non-legal professionals. The ability to multitask and communicate effectively is essential. A willingness and aptitude for learning legal and procedural aspects of patent prosecution are also required.


IDEAL CANDIDATE must have:

  • BS degree (or a higher degree, especially Ph.D. preferred) in the Electrical Engineering or Physics.
  • At least 5 years’ experience as an engineer or as a scientist in the field of semiconductor devices or other similar fields.
  • Must have a high level engineering skills and knowledge in electrical engineering and/or physics.
  • Fluent (business level) Japanese preferable, but not mandatory.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and with a team.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage numerous projects concurrently.
  • Ability to perform under pressure.
  • Must be able to work overtime.


In-house Translator (Japanese to English) (Santa Clara)

Chen Yoshimura LLP actively seeks exceptional Japanese to English in-house translators for full-time employment at our Santa Clara office. In-house translators learn about cutting-edge technology and collaborate with other language professionals, legal practitioners, and clients to produce a sophisticated translation while receiving intense instruction and feedback.

IDEAL CANDIDATE must have:

  • Fluent Japanese and English (Native English speaker preferred).
  • Extreme attention to detail.
  • Superior writing skills in English.
  • Professional experience with technical translation/patent translation, and/or advanced translation credentials (ATA, JAT, MAT, etc).
  • Familiarity with CAT tools.
  • Ability to work under pressure and accept constructive criticism.
  • At least a bachelor's degree (master's preferred) or the equivalent.
  • Demonstrable ability to quickly grasp new technical & scientific concepts.
  • Ability to work overtime and be in our Santa Clara office during normal business hours.

*Freelance work is also available on a project-by-project basis for professionals who have been active in patent translation or technical translation for several years.



Associate (Santa Clara)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee and manage patent application docketing.
  • Oversee, improve and maintain the firm's patent prosecution system.
  • Prosecute U.S. patent applications before the USPTO.

IDEAL CANDIDATE must have:

  • California bar membership.
  • USPTO registration number.
  • Minimum 3 years legal work experience in the patent field as a patent prosecutor.
  • Significant science/engineering background, Ph.D. in physics preferred.
  • Computer proficiency (the firm operates virtually paperless).
  • Fluent (business level) Japanese preferable, but not mandatory.
  • Good organizational and time management skills with attention to details.
  • Excellent communication skills.


Contract Patent Agent (30+ hours per week) (Santa Clara)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee and manage patent application docketing.
  • Oversee, improve and maintain the firm's patent prosecution system.
  • Prosecute U.S. patent applications before the USPTO.

IDEAL CANDIDATE must have:

  • USPTO registration number.
  • Minimum 3 years legal work experience in the patent field as a patent prosecutor.
